RUVUMA ESTUARY - MNAZI BAY MARINE PARKS
 
A BRIEF TO THE RELEVANCE OF MNAZI BAY-RUVUMA ESTUARY MARINE PARK ON THE MTWARA DEVELOPMENT CORRIDOR STRATEGY

Mnazi Bay-Ruvuma Estuary Marine Park is a multi-purpose marine protected area with globally significant marine biodiversity values.

Gazetted in 2000, after the declaration of the Parliament, the Park covers a total land and sea area of 650 km2 with 20,000 inhabitants. The park is at its initial stage of its establishment with the Institutional set up in place and operational that includes the Park Advisory Committee, recruitment of the Warden Incharge, office accommodation and other basic amenities.

A process to recruit another 11 technical staff, and mobilizing Law enforcement, outreach and communication facilities has been initiated.

The Park has received GEF support amounting to 1.5 million US Dollar for a period of 4.5 years effective from March 2002, and has already recruited the Technical Advisor to assist in the implementation of the GEF support component. Participating in the GEF project support are UNDP and IUCN East Africa office.

Preliminary biological and sociological surveys shall commence when key staff and necessary facilities are in place.

The focus of the Parks' management shall be sustainable use of marine resources by communities within the vicinity of the Park and Mtwara region, as well as biodiversity conservation through protected area zoning with sustainable harvesting.

The Marine Park shall contribute significantly in the Mtwara regions poverty reduction initiatives by addressing the Marine Parks' externalities, including investment promotions related with Coastal Tourism Development, Fisheries, Livestock and agriculture.

The contagious set up of the Marine Park with terrestrial wildlife parks of Selous and Lukwika - Lumesule game reserves is a strategic potential new tourist itinerary package for the growing national Southern tourism circuit development. 

So far two investors have been attracted to the Marine Park area they include Ten degrees South a British owned company and Ruvula Sea Safaris and Tours owned by a Belgian. Other tourist Agents who brings tourist to the marine park are, the Black or White Ltd (Finland) managed by the Finish MLK Investment Corporation LTD and Mtwara Boma Hotel managed by Trade Aid of Britain.

Intra trade interactions and communication shall be elevated because of Southern circuit tourism development and proximity with Neighboring Mozambique.

The availability of huge gas deposits inside the park is a potential energy source for the industrial and agricultural development to the Mtwara corridor development strategy.
