2 MBUDYA ISLAND MARINE
RESERVE
Location: Mbudya is an inhabited island
It is located between 06040’ - 06040.5 S and 39015”E to the northwest.
NATURAL RESOURCES
The natural resources of the area are very similar to that of
Bongoyo.
FACILITIES AVAILABLE:
The island offers fabulous snorkeling and diving opportunities and is a fourable day outing for visitors to the section of Tanzanian
coast. Mbudya island is situated about 3 km offshore, within easy reach of the hotels on the North coast of Dar es Salaam.
There are hereby sand beaches on the western and eastern sides. On the western side, it is possible to have barbecued fish with chips and
drinks. There is plenty of shade under the Casuarina trees.
It is also possible circumnavigate the island on feet and there are lively dead shells (but not allowed to be collected). The island is
clothed with dense stands of palms and baobabs. The rare coconut crabs (Birgus latro) are found on the island. To get to the island,
one of many local motorized dhow and ngalawas can be hired. The hotels i.e. White Sands, Silver Sands, Kunduchi Beach, Beach
Comber are Bahari Beach are able to provide more modern transport to the island.
There are two nature trails, the central train to beach II on the leeward side of the island and the grave nature trail passing through the
3 Sheriffs graves. When in the trails you can fill god and cool breeze and also you can observe different birds and canopy vegetations.
There is a washroom located near the resting beach. On the beach there are bandas where you can rest while enjoying chips with fish
and soft drinks provided by our Honorary Rangers.
(3) SINDA (INNER AND OUTER)
In the past the island was used as temporary fishing camps that resulted into felling of trees for use as firewood and building material.
Firewood collected from the Island was also used for limekilns.
Despite the observed malpractice and damages both the Inner and Outer Sinda, they remain relatively undisturbed and are unique to
Dar es Salaam. The island has a very good swimming and snorkeling beach.
(4) MAKATUBE (OUTER AND INNER)
The outer Makatube has relatively good coral cover and diversity despite its nearness to the harbor inlet and the Ocean road sewage
out fall. The coral dully protected could have a potential for a genetic bank for resettlement on adjacent areas.
Efforts are underway to put up a conservation management plan.
(5) KENDWA
This Island joined with Makatube by coral rag. The island is exposed to surge waves and strong currents.
The effect of dynamite fishing resulted in the destruction of many coral reefs surroundings the Island, however regeneration of the coral is taking place in
some areas. . Efforts are underway to put up a conservation management plan.
